The cloud talent premium
Cloud engineers command some of the highest salaries in tech. A certified AWS Solutions Architect in the US earns $160K-$200K. Azure and GCP equivalents are in the same range. DevOps engineers with Kubernetes and Terraform expertise often exceed $190K.
Offshore, these same certifications and skills are available at 60-70% lower cost — with one critical advantage: India's cloud talent pool has been trained by the hyperscalers themselves. AWS, Microsoft, and Google all operate major training and certification programmes in India.
Cloud talent by platform
AWS — largest talent pool
AWS dominates the Indian cloud market. The talent pool is the deepest and most mature, with strong expertise across:
- Infrastructure: EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, VPC networking
- Data: RDS, DynamoDB, Redshift, Kinesis, Glue
- DevOps: CloudFormation, CDK, CodePipeline, Systems Manager
- Security: IAM, KMS, GuardDuty, Config, Security Hub
Microsoft Azure — enterprise favourite
Azure talent is strongest among professionals coming from Microsoft partner ecosystems. If your company runs on Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, or Active Directory, an Azure-native cloud team is the natural fit:
- Azure DevOps (pipelines, boards, repos)
- AKS for Kubernetes workloads
- Azure Functions, Logic Apps, Event Grid
- Azure Sentinel and Defender for security operations
Google Cloud — data and ML focus
GCP talent tends to be strongest in data engineering and ML. If your workload is BigQuery, Vertex AI, or GKE, the offshore talent is available but thinner. Expect to pay a 10-15% premium for GCP specialists compared to AWS equivalents.
The DevOps engineering stack
Cloud engineers rarely work in isolation. A well-rounded offshore cloud team combines infrastructure skills with DevOps automation:
- Terraform: Infrastructure as Code across any cloud. HashiCorp certification is the gold standard.
- Kubernetes: CKA/CKAD certified engineers who design production clusters with proper networking, RBAC, and observability.
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or ArgoCD — your team should own the entire deployment pipeline.
Cloud engineering is one area where certifications genuinely matter. They prove hands-on lab experience with specific services. Always verify certification status during the vetting process.
Recommended team structure
- Cloud/DevOps Lead: 8+ years, Solutions Architect certified, owns infrastructure design. $5,000-$7,000/mo offshore.
- DevOps Engineer (2): 4-6 years, Terraform + K8s + CI/CD. $3,500-$5,000/mo offshore.
- Site Reliability Engineer: Monitoring, alerting, incident response, SLO management. $4,000-$5,500/mo offshore.
That is a 4-person cloud team for $16,000-$22,500/mo offshore versus $55,000-$72,000/mo in the US. Explore AWS salary data and cloud interview questions for more detail.
