How the numbers are worked out

US fully loaded cost = annual base salary × employer cost multiplier × headcount. The multiplier adds the benefits a US employer pays on top of wages. BLS counts five groups: paid leave, supplemental pay, insurance, retirement and savings, and legally required benefits such as Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance and workers' compensation.

The default of 1.43 is derived from the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026 (published September 9, 2026). Private-industry employers paid $46.89 per hour worked in total compensation, of which $32.82 (70.0%) was wages and salaries and $14.07 (30.0%) was benefits. For full-time private-industry workers alone the same release gives $54.00 total and $36.97 in wages, a multiplier of about 1.46, so the default is on the low side for full-time hires.

Offshore1st cost = the low and high end of our published monthly rate for the seniority level × 12 × headcount. Where in the range a person lands depends on their experience and the role.

Saving = US cost minus Offshore1st cost, shown as a range in dollars and as a percentage of the US cost.

What is left out: recruiting or agency fees, equipment, office space, software and the management time to hire and run an in-house US team. Including them would raise the US figure, so treat the saving shown as a floor. Figures are in US dollars before tax.

Calculator questions

How does the calculator work out the US cost?

It multiplies the US base salary you enter by the employer cost multiplier and by the headcount. The multiplier turns a salary into total employer compensation cost: salary plus benefits such as paid leave, insurance, retirement contributions and legally required payroll costs. The default of 1.43 comes from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, where wages and salaries were 70.0 percent of private-industry compensation costs.

Where do the default US salaries come from?

They are round example figures to get you started, not survey data. Replace them with the salary you would actually offer for the role in your market, or with figures from your own compensation data. The result is only as good as the salary you enter.

What does the Offshore1st cost include?

The monthly rate per person covers salary, statutory contributions, benefits, office space, equipment, software licences and management. There is no long-term contract and no placement fee. The calculator shows the low and high end of the published rate for each seniority level, multiplied by 12 months.

What does the comparison leave out?

On the US side it leaves out recruiting fees, equipment, office space and the management time needed to hire and run an in-house team, so the US figure is lower than what most employers really pay. That makes the saving shown conservative. Your own time directing the work day to day applies to both options and is not counted on either side.

Do Offshore1st rates depend on the technology?

No. Rates depend on seniority, not technology. Monthly rates per person, all-inclusive: Junior (1-2 years): US$1,800–2,500; Mid-Level (3-5 years): US$2,500–3,500; Senior (6-9 years): US$3,500–5,000; Architect / Lead (10+ years): US$5,000–7,000.
