The vetting problem
The number one fear companies have about offshore development is quality. "How do I know the developer is actually good?" It is a valid concern — and the answer lies entirely in the vetting process.
Most offshore providers run a 30-minute technical interview and call it done. At Offshore1st, our screening process takes 48 hours and evaluates developers across five dimensions. Here is how it works.
The five-layer screening framework
Layer 1: Technical depth assessment (2 hours)
Every candidate completes a timed coding challenge specific to their technology stack. This is not a generic algorithm quiz — it is a real-world problem that mirrors the kind of work they will do for clients.
- Frontend developers: Build a responsive component with state management, API integration, and error handling.
- Backend developers: Design an API with authentication, database modelling, and edge case handling.
- Full-stack: Both, with emphasis on how cleanly the pieces integrate.
Layer 2: System design review (1 hour)
Senior candidates walk through a system design exercise. We evaluate architecture thinking, scalability awareness, and the ability to make trade-off decisions. This is where you separate the coders from the engineers.
Layer 3: Code review simulation (45 minutes)
Candidates review a pull request containing intentional bugs, anti-patterns, and security vulnerabilities. We evaluate:
- Bug detection rate: Do they catch the obvious and subtle issues?
- Communication quality: Are their review comments clear, constructive, and actionable?
- Standards awareness: Do they reference industry best practices?
Layer 4: Communication and collaboration (30 minutes)
Technical skill without communication skill is a liability in distributed teams. We conduct a live conversation that evaluates:
- English fluency: Can they explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders?
- Async readiness: Do they write clear documentation? Can they articulate blockers in writing?
- Cultural fit: Are they proactive in raising issues, or do they wait to be asked?
Layer 5: Reference and background verification (24 hours)
We verify employment history, check references from previous managers (not just colleagues), and validate certifications. For senior roles, we also review their open-source contributions or published work.
The result
Of every 100 developers who enter our pipeline, only 8–12 make it through all five layers. This selectivity is why our clients see productive contributions from week one, not month two.
The bottom line: You do not need to build this vetting infrastructure yourself. Offshore1st has invested years in refining this process so that every developer you receive has already passed a bar higher than most companies set for their domestic hires.
