Offshore Team Pricing Models Compared: Dedicated, Hourly, and Project-Based

Three pricing models, three different use cases

Every offshore staffing company offers some variation of three pricing models. The right choice depends on your project clarity, timeline, and management capacity. Choosing the wrong model is the most common reason offshore engagements fail financially.

Model 1: Dedicated team (monthly retainer)

You pay a fixed monthly rate per person. The team member works exclusively for you, typically 40 hours per week. This is our primary model at Offshore1st and the one we recommend for most engagements.

How it works

  • Monthly rate: $2,500-$7,000/person depending on role and seniority
  • Minimum commitment: typically 3-6 months
  • You manage priorities and daily work
  • The staffing partner handles HR, payroll, benefits, and infrastructure

Best for

  • Ongoing product development with evolving requirements
  • Teams of 2+ people working together
  • Companies that want direct management control
  • Long-term engagements (6+ months)

Watch out for

  • Bench risk: If your work is seasonal, you still pay during slow periods. Some providers offer pause clauses — ask for them.
  • Hidden markups: Some agencies pay developers $1,500/mo and charge you $5,000/mo. The 70%+ margin means they have no incentive to source top talent. Ask about rate transparency.

At Offshore1st, we share exact developer compensation with clients. Our margin is transparent and fixed. This aligns our incentive: we attract better talent because we pay better. See our pricing page for details.

Model 2: Hourly billing (time and materials)

You pay for hours worked. Rates typically range from $25-$75/hr depending on skill and seniority. Common in staff augmentation.

How it works

  • Hourly rate: $25-$75/hr depending on role
  • Weekly or monthly invoicing based on time tracked
  • Flexible hours — scale up or down week to week
  • Often shorter minimum commitments (1-3 months)

Best for

  • Variable workloads with unpredictable demand
  • Specialised consulting engagements (architecture review, security audit)
  • Trial periods before committing to a dedicated hire

Watch out for

  • Hours inflation: Without proper tracking, you may pay for 8 hours and get 5 hours of productive work. Require screen time tracking or output-based metrics.
  • Higher effective cost: At $50/hr × 160 hours = $8,000/mo — often more expensive than a dedicated hire. The flexibility premium is real.

Model 3: Fixed-price project

You agree on a scope and price upfront. The offshore team delivers the defined output for the quoted price.

How it works

  • Detailed scope document and acceptance criteria
  • Fixed price with milestone-based payments (30/30/40 is common)
  • Provider manages team composition and allocation
  • You evaluate deliverables against specifications

Best for

  • Well-defined projects with clear requirements (MVP builds, redesigns, migrations)
  • Companies without technical management capacity
  • One-time projects without ongoing development needs

Watch out for

  • Scope creep penalties: Any change request outside the original scope triggers a change order with premium pricing. Budget 20-30% contingency.
  • Quality shortcuts: The provider's incentive is to deliver minimum viable scope as fast as possible. Rigorous acceptance testing is essential.
  • The "90% done" trap: Projects appear 90% complete for weeks while the hard 10% drags on. Tie payments to functional milestones, not percentage complete.

Our recommendation

For 80% of companies, the dedicated team model is the best choice. It provides the cost predictability of fixed pricing with the flexibility of hourly billing. You get a team that learns your codebase, understands your product, and improves over time.

Start with 2-3 dedicated team members. Run a 3-month pilot. Measure output against your onshore team. Then scale based on data, not assumptions. Talk to us about structuring your first engagement.
