India and SAP: a decades-long relationship
India relationship with SAP began in the 1990s when the country first major IT services companies — Infosys, TCS, Wipro — became SAP implementation partners. Three decades later, India has over 500,000 SAP professionals, more than any country outside Germany.
This is not just volume — it is depth. Indian SAP talent spans every module (S/4HANA, FI/CO, MM, SD, PP, HCM, SuccessFactors, Ariba, BTP) and every role (functional consultants, ABAP developers, Basis administrators, architects).
Why Indian SAP talent stands out
Implementation experience at scale
- Enterprise exposure: Indian SAP professionals have worked on implementations for Fortune 500 companies across manufacturing, retail, pharmaceuticals, and financial services. They have seen the edge cases that textbooks do not cover.
- Migration expertise: With SAP pushing customers to S/4HANA by 2027, migration expertise is critical. India has the largest pool of professionals who have completed ECC-to-S/4HANA migrations.
- Multi-industry knowledge: The IT services model means Indian consultants often work across multiple industries, giving them cross-pollination benefits that single-industry professionals lack.
Cost advantage
An SAP S/4HANA Functional Consultant in the US costs $160,000–$200,000 annually. In India, equivalent talent costs $30,000–$55,000. For SAP ABAP Developers, the differential is even larger: $130,000–$170,000 in the US versus $25,000–$45,000 in India.
Certification density
India has one of the highest concentrations of SAP-certified professionals globally. For every SAP module, you can find certified consultants with 5–15 years of experience — a combination that is almost impossible to find domestically at any price.
Building your offshore SAP team
Start with the right roles
- S/4HANA Functional Consultant: Your first hire should be a senior functional consultant who understands your industry. They bridge business requirements and technical configuration.
- ABAP/Fiori Developer: For custom development, reports, and extensions. Look for developers with both classic ABAP and modern Fiori/UI5 experience.
- Basis Administrator: Essential for system health, performance tuning, transport management, and security. Often overlooked but critical for ongoing operations.
Avoid common mistakes
- Do not hire generalists: SAP is deeply specialised. An MM consultant cannot do FI/CO work effectively. Hire module-specific expertise.
- Validate project experience: SAP certifications alone do not guarantee competence. Ask for specific project references, including go-live dates and system complexity.
- Plan for time zone overlap: SAP work often requires real-time collaboration with business users. Ensure at least 3–4 hours of overlap with your primary business timezone.
The S/4HANA migration opportunity
With SAP mainstream maintenance for ECC ending in 2027, every SAP customer needs to migrate to S/4HANA. Building an offshore SAP team now gives you the talent and capacity to complete this migration on schedule and on budget — rather than competing for scarce domestic resources at premium rates.
The bottom line: India mature SAP ecosystem, combined with significant cost advantages, makes it the obvious choice for building SAP capability. Whether you need a 3-person support team or a 30-person implementation group, the talent is available and proven.
